8/31/08 03:50 pm - Hurricaine Gusrtav - Resources

Resources
I am passing this on, from someone who doesn't have time to cross post everything:

If you're interested in following the storm's progress or helping folks
remotely, here are a few resource sites the nonprofit tech community has set
up (we started early since we learned with Katrina):

http://gustav08.ning.com/ (this is where we'll post all volunteer needs!)

http://hurricanegustav.wordpress.com/ (Red Cross updates)

State of Louisiana volunteerism site:

http://www.volunteerlouisiana.gov/18...IndexAction.do

If you're familiar with Twitter (http://www.twitter.com), you can follow any
of the nptech disaster team tweeps, including:

acarvin
MarkMayhew
SueCline
Kanter
RedCross

Note that all of our nptech folks on the ground in New Orleans *have* safely
evacuated from the immediate path of the storm so these twitter channels
will largely be information distribution, rapid response and technical
support.

If you're familiar with using an RSS feed reader (gmail users have one
integrated into their account), you can subscribe to these feeds (you'll
have to visit the page to pick up the actual RSS feed, first):

http://search.twitter.com/search?q=Hurricane+Gustav

http://search.twitter.com/search?q=Gustav

http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23gustav

Last but not least, live video & scanner images are here:

http://jeftek.com/events/monitoring-hurricane-gustav/

If you are using social media, please tag with #gustav or #hurricane gustav

Real time hurricane updates are going to come through these channels to
minimize normal twitter chatter:

http://www.twitter.com/redcross
http://www.twitter.com/dfwgustav
http://www.twitter.com/gustavreporter
http://www.twitter.com/milvius
http://www.twitter.com/gustavalerts
http://www.twitter.com/gustav08
http://www.twitter.com/hurricanealerts
http://www.twitter.com/hurricanes2008
http://www.twitter.com/Katrinskaya

We've got a wiki up at: http://gustavwiki.com/wiki/Main_Page

Radio & tech amateurs are using http://w9wsw.com/ to connect volunteers. If
you or anyone you know is an experienced radio operator, please pitch in -
there is already an immediate need for volunteers.

If you want to see levee images from my March New Orleans trip they're mixed
into this set:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/sueclin...7604220031417/

I'll have more as the day progresses - we've got a 6pm video conference
scheduled. As usual, the holiday weekend has caught a bunch of folks out of
town, so once the animal rescue specialists and evacuation centers come on
line, we'll have a better idea of help needed.

Two more resources: The National Emergency Family Registry and Locator
System can be found at https://asd.fema.gov/inter/nefrls/home.htm

You can also register via phone at Register/Search: 1-800-588-9822 or
Report/Search For A Missing Child: 1-866-908-9570

Also, please feel free to distribute all of these resources as widely as
possible! I am not going to be able to cross post in many places as usual,
so if you can help spread the word, many thanks!

3/20/08 07:18 pm - Wow - LJ Strike - NY starts 8 PM March 20th

Glad I got my computer back and running long enough to go on strike..

he one-day content strike is on for this Friday, March 21, from midnight GMT to midnight GMT.

For 24 hours, we will not post or comment to LJ. Not in our own journals, not in communities. Not publicly, privately, or under friends-lock.

Why? Because the new owners of LJ said they were going to listen to a user driven advisory board before making any changes, and didn't. They instead tried to take away all GLBT related interest groups, and were about to take away all free, ad free accounts as well and make LJ paid. Basic/free users help drive this site! And paid or not, our interests should not be dictated to us.

Apparently paid ads for "curing" homosexuality are appearing in the free journals of queer folk, while ads for "curing" autism are appearing in the journals of Aspergers people. WTF, people?

This is normal for a regular business, but utterly preposterous for a business built specifically around the idea of community.

This is a protest that will have long-lasting effects, showing up forever in the daily posting statistics.

This is a protest that will not harm LJ in the long run, as leaving LJ might do.

This is a protest that will demonstrate the power of community, as all users unite to support Basic users and the concept of ad-free space.

This is a protest that will educate the new owners that LJ is driven by user-created content.

Content Strike Friday March 21, from midnight to midnight GMT

* We are holding the Content Strike because we want to demonstrate that LiveJournal is content-driven.
* We are holding the Content Strike because we want the new owners of LiveJournal to better understand the power and resolve of the LJ Community of Users.
* We are holding the Content Strike because all of us, Paid, Permanent and Plus users as well as Basic, want to demonstrate our solidarity as a Community of Users. We do not consider Basic users to be freeloaders, we consider them to be valuable content-providers and Friends.
* We are holding the Content Strike because we ache to do something to show our displeasure, and commenting on the news post -- even with cat macros -- just isn't powerful enough!

---------------------------------------

The strike has three terms:

1. Restore basic accounts for new account creation.
2. Inform users before any change to the site that affects how we use the site or demands on our resources.
3. Run change proposals by the Advisory Board and take their advice into account before implementation of any change.

***

The 24-hour strike will begin at the following times for the following locations:

Thursday, March 20, 2:00 PM -- Honolulu
Thursday, March 20, 4:00 PM -- Anchorage
Thursday, March 20, 5:00 PM -- San Francisco; Los Angeles -
Thursday, March 20, 6:00 PM -- Mexico City; Denver - Navajo Nations in AZ.
Thursday, March 20, 7:00 PM -- Chicago
Thursday, March 20, 8:00 PM -- Montreal; New York
Thursday, March 20, 9:00 PM -- Buenos Aires

Friday, March 21, 1:00 AM -- Paris
Friday, March 21, 2:00 AM -- Istanbul
Friday, March 21, 3:00 AM -- Moscow
Friday, March 21, 4:00 AM -- Dubai
Friday, March 21, 5:00 AM -- Islamabad
Friday, March 21, 6:00 AM -- Bangladesh
Friday, March 21, 7:00 AM -- Bangkok
Friday, March 21, 8:00 AM -- Singapore
Friday, March 21, 9:00 AM -- Tokyo
Friday, March 21, 10:00 AM -- Brisbane
Friday, March 21, 11:00 AM -- Sydney
Friday, March 21, 12 Noon -- Suva

----------------------------------------

----------------------------------------

How Can I Help?

DO post about this in your own LJ.
DO post and comment about it in appropriate communities.
DO remember that it's based on Greenwich Mean Time, which may not be your local time.
DO turn off LoudTwitter and your RSS feeds for 24 hours.

DON'T forget to get permission from community mods before making an off-topic post or comment about the strike.
DON'T be spammy with your posts or comments about the strike.
DON'T forget to turn your LoudTwitter and RSS feeds back on when the strike is over.
DON'T post anything on LJ from midnight to midnight March 21 (see above times for your actual start time)

2/25/08 07:50 am - Femme 2008 - Call for submissions

I Had a wonderful Mind Blowing time, at Femme 2006 !
I certainly hope to be at this one also !

___________________________________________________________

Call for Workshops, Papers, Performance, and Art
Femme2008: The Architecture of Femme
Chicago Wyndham O'Hare
August 15th - 17th, 2008
www.femmecollective.com

Femme2008: The Architecture of Femme is a multi-threaded
conference and forum for those who think about, talk about, and
create Femme as a queer gender and identity.

Following our Femme2006 conference in San Francisco, where over
400 femmes and allies gathered for three days of workshops,
panels, and performances, we again invite community members,
artists, academics, homemakers, geeks, techies, activists, femmes
of all kinds, and their allies to continue the conversation by
participating in Femme 2008 as presenters and participants.

We are invested in having Femme2008 continue to reflect the
diversity and complexity of femme gender, identity and
contributions. We hope for this conference to be a community
building event, as well as an exploration and celebration of what
it means to build and live queer femme identities.

Submissions of all kinds are welcome, particularly submissions by
femmes. We encourage proposals by and for people of color,
working-class people, fat folks, and people with disabilities.
We encourage submissions that work outside and alongside identity
and gender, as well as those reflecting directly upon identity
and gender. Femme2008 will continue the community dialogue begun
at Femme2006. In particular, we hope that the intersections of
femme with race, region, class, access, ability, privilege, and
marginalization will be talked about, given space, meditated upon,
constructed, and deconstructed.

We began this conference in 2006 out of a desire to see femme
explored and discussed from a variety of perspectives. We wanted
a conference that held the complexities of Queer Femme as its
central focus, while building community. We feel we accomplished
that in 2006, and in 2008, we want to continue to build femme
community and bridges, supporting each other across borders and
differences.

We hope to draw participants from across disciplinary, medium,
and social boundaries. We encourage submissions from anyone
interested, regardless of gender or sexual identity. We do ask
that you read our mission statement before submitting.

We are are soliciting contributions from anyone interested,
including (but not limited to):

> workshops
> performances
> research presentations
> skill shares
> activist & organizational topics
> visual art
> video or film

Submission deadline is May 1, 2008.

11/13/06 02:32 pm - Best Friends....

My bestest best friend, is a Butch..who lives, many miles away..
We talk.. a lot
On the phone, sometimes the computer..

somedays its every day....
No one holds, as many of my secrets as he does...
I hold all of his....
We never get off the phone or the puter, without reminding the other, that they are loved :)
Anyway, today, was one of those days .. and i wanted to say, how very very much, I value his friendship :)
Oh, and since only Jen has met him, here is a photo ;)
Along with his new puppy girl..lol.. I gather she's already doubled in size .....

10/23/06 07:40 am - Knitting

Here we go :)
Things i have knitted..and stiches I have more or less, learned...
This would be basic Garter Stich, and changing tarns.. hasnt been finished off yet, but you get the idea..Merino Wool, very very nice ! Ok, I dont remember what size needles, maybe 10.5 ? and teh yarn, came from a Thrift Shop but its..not quite bulky, , more than worsted... Actually, seems to have come from the Farm that sells Merino Wool, at teh Union Square Greenmarket, and as such, was a real bargain at $1 ! I love teh Periwinkle color

Next, heres Ribbed for Her Pleasure Scarf ..lol
Basic 2 count Rib, k2 p2, rep to end, Blueberry Pie Yarn, from Red Heart
Maybe size 8 needles? I have to remember to start noting that stuff

Now this is not finished but its a really cool way to use up various end pieces..and use increase & decrease... Stripey Scarf
Mostly bulky yarns, and twisted ones..
Last but not least is this Basketweave one Ive been going on about! I love this pattern, which is essentially a 2 - 4 rib, interrupyed and turned around.. Th eyarn here is Simply Soft by Caron, and it is a very very soft acrylic ! Liked it a lot...

10/6/06 04:53 pm - TV or Not TV ?

I have never bought a Television
Yep, thats a true statement.
When I first moved in to this apartment, maybe.. 29 years ago, my mom, owned a small building and gave me one, left over from some tenant skipping out on teh rent
I used that forever. It had actually, kinda quit doi8ng color , but I didnt even notice, until I was watching a roommates TV one day, and was like..huh? You mean people arent really green ?
So,I asked my father, for xmas or my birthday, to get me new one, and he obliged... ( twice a year he asks me to name something like that, thats normal)
Then he got a new one, and gave me his old ( to him) ,. new and gigantic, to me..
Last night, it started getting erratic and it has gone downhill..
I really dont think its teh cable, I think its teh TV
I have no idea how to fix it
adn ..Now Im wondering, addicted as I am.. maybe its time to go TV less?
What do you all think?
Its the only one I have ( and btw, anyone who feels like coming over and takeing a crack at fixing it is welcome too..hint hint.. I did check that everything was connected and I did boot the cable.. thats about the extent of my fix it knowledge )
It could be interesting, I suspect, I would listen to more music..I already read a lot, thats not going to change much..
And xmas is coming up, I could ask for one again...or not :)

10/2/06 03:21 pm - Current Knitting Projects - Learning Projects

Ok, I finished one Garter Stich, in two colors, merino wool, from a thrift shop, scarf, which is destined for Bombay : ) The Doctor, not the place... Its a Welcome to the NYC Winters .. gift !
But I admittedly have not yet tucked in all the ends...
I also finished Ribbed For Her Pleasure, in "Blueberry Pie" Yarn, not perfect but good enough, not sure where that one is going
Its a rib stich, 24 stiches, knit 2, purl 2 .. :)
Its acrylic and I would like it to be softer, not sure if thers a way to do that
Meanwhile, I m,ay have abandoned, or at least laid aside, on eo fthe increase & decrease striped Scarf, the one in the .. hmm.. worsted thread... one kind, multi colored.. beautiful, I think cotton :) Another from the HL stash of Yarns...
Now, the other stripey one, in the.. damn it I dont know the names yet..a much thicker yarn(s) and is severla different colors, different yarns, bits and pieces, even some pink :) .. Going to throw in some of teh windowpane ( more HL Stash)
And, Im trying to do a basketweave scarf, with some pretty light blue yarn..
I love the making patterns with stiches :)
I look forward to being able to do it without constatntly checking the pattern :)

9/28/06 04:46 pm - Dyke Stich n Bitch :)

I have taken up Knitting :)
I figured, I keep seeing these things about how, peopel over a certain age.. ::ahem: : should be learning new things, keeping the mind active etc etc.. Sooo..I knew i didnt wnat to learn a language, and.. I dunno, several people I knew, mentioned it, and I jumped in : 0
There turns out to be a radical Dyke Knitting Circle at BlueStockings , a radical Book store here: 0 Its only once a month though, and I cant stop !!!!!!!!!! I knit constantly !
Any other Stich n Bitch'ers out there ?

9/28/06 07:10 am - Not Smoking

Morning everyone..
Welll, the biggest new thing this last year, has been that I did indeed, quit smoking...
Anyonewho knows me realtime, knew how totally into smoking I was ,and how uninterested in quitting I was
Well, I guess miracles do happen.. cause I quit and have stayed quit 6 months 1 week 3 days
I have a lil software thing that tells me that :) as well as how much Ive saved ...$729 ( and I rolled my own ! ) , I have not smoked 5830 cigarettes, and saved aproximatly 2 weeks , 6 days of my life :)
Anybody else a "quitter" ?
I'll probably say some more about this in days to come....

9/27/06 03:25 pm - My Brother, Ky Hote Appearing live Tonight !

This would be my actual by blood brother, Ky Hote , in a rare NYC appearance ;)
